Book of paintings, 2019. Twelve hand-painted black rectangles using black gesso on Strathmore drawing paper. 7.75 x 9.75 inches.
An old interview with Gerhard Richter has him talking about a series of identical gray canvases he did in school. He said what struck him about the works were as he progressed in the series, he preferred some to others, even though they were all the "same." As an exercise in studying that reaction, I painted 12 black rectangles in a journal.
Originally painted in 2018, a year later the pages were subsequently torn from the journal, but remained naturally bound together, and were turned into a one-off 'book' of sorts.
